Take a closer look at lakes, rivers & wetlands along the walk.
A Quiet View Across the Water 🌿 What catches your eye first: the blue water, the tree framed across the river, or the long dam in the distance? Branches and autumn leaves frame a calm stretch of water beneath a clear sky. The trees really know how to frame the view!
Water Over the Steps 💦 Which part draws your eye: the flowing water or the stone dividers? Water pours over a low stepped dam into a pool, with sunlit leaves and green growth along the edges. The water is taking the steps one drop at a time.
Creekside Crossing 💧 Which stone would you choose as your stepping stone? Flat rocks make a natural crossing through this shallow creek, with a wooden bridge just upstream and bare trees reflected in the water. Looks like the creek has a few stepping-stone options on the rocks.
A clear creek through the woods 💧 Do you prefer a creek view that follows the bend or one that looks straight across? Clear, shallow water curves through leafless trees, reflecting branches above its sandy, stony bed. That bend gives the creek a little stream of consciousness.
Clouds and calm water at Occoquan Bay ☁️ What shapes do you see reflected on the water? A textured gray-white sky fills most of the view above a quiet bay, with low shoreline plants framing the water and distant homes along the opposite shore. The clouds brought their reflections along for the walk.
Autumn has a lake-side seat 🍂 Which part of this shoreline would make you pause? Yellow and orange trees line Burke Lake beneath a blue sky. The closer shoreline reflects in the water, while wider views show ripples stretching toward the distant trees. The leaves brought their best lake-side manners.

A rocky creekside pause 🍁 What would you explore first along this shallow stretch? Sunlight falls across exposed stones and fallen leaves beside the water, while a backpack and folding stool rest in the foreground. This creek has plenty of sitting stones—though one came prepared with a chair.
A quiet pond framed by fall woods 🍂 What detail draws your eye across the reflections? Branches and autumn-colored trees mirror in the still water, with reeds and grasses edging the near shore. The pond is keeping a pretty good branch of the family tree.
